Well, I've been sitting on this one for a while and it took till chapter 18 for me to get into, but I finished it tonight. A Savage Place takes place in Los Angeles. Spencer is hired to help out Candy, who's a reporter trying to prove that she's more than a pretty face. She thinks that she's uncovered a conspiracy with a movie studio and needs Spencer as a body guard. There's no Hawk in this one, so that's a minus. I guess I'm used to him being part of the story. God help me when I read those books before Hawk. On the flip side, you do get to see a side of Spencer that you normally don't see in this story. This should of been a super quick read, but my heart wasn't in it. You should read it cause another book reference the events in this one, but don't put it on top of this list. Being generous here giving it 3 out of 5.
Well, I literally just finished this one moments ago. It's been raining here this afternoon. Yes, I'm at River Road, trying to unplug, so I decided to read. I was already three-fourths done with this one before I got here. I thought it would take me longer than it did. This time Spencer is hired to protect the TV start, Jill Joyce. She's being harassed by some mysterious male and Spencer has to figure out who. Jill turns out to be high maintenance and a real pain in the butt. There's a good mix of action and humor in this one. It has a pretty good pace too...definitely a short read. Still, I enjoyed it. As with most of the Spencer novels, the final ending is somewhat abrupt, but it fits. I'm going to give this one a 4 out of 5.
Finished this one the other night. It's kind of a sequel to Parker's novel, Early Autumn. If you don't remember, in that one, Spencer rescues a 15 year old boy from his divorced parents and, in essence teaches how to be a man. This time Paul comes back to Spence, now in his mid-twenty's and his Mom is missing. He asks Spencer to help him locate her. It's an interesting novel wear along the search for Paul's mother, we get to learn more about Spencer's past. I have to admit, it started off a little slow. I think part of that was my fault. Work had been kicking my butt here lately and I haven't been in the mood for much. With that said, I'm giving this one a 3.5 out of 5.
Meant to post this sooner. I finished this Spencer novel last Thursday. Definitely a different style than the last one I read. This time Spencer is hired to head out west to Potshot, AZ to find out who murdered hisclient's husband. This town is being harassed buy a group locals called the Dell, who go into town to collect protection money from the local establishments. Eventually, things get bad enough where Spencer has to call in some help. He recruits some of the old standbys, Such as Hawk and Vinnie, as well as some of the other characters from the past. There is a mixed pace to this story. As always, it had some humor in it as well as some action. Being somewhat generous here, but I'm giving it 4 out of 5.
Finished this one yesterday morning. By far, it's one of my favorites. Not sure this is one you pick up and read if you've never read any other Spencer novels. It's not exactly your typical Spencer plot...or is it? Not to give too much away, Spencer is hired to rescue this lady's son who's been kidnapped by her ex-husband. There's a great deal of character in this one where Spencer someone reveals about his past...to a certain extinct. While I think the Spencer character is pretty cool with his quick wit and tough guy persona, it's the non-action things he does in this story that makes him uber-cool. Definitely pick this one up after you have a few other Spencer novels are under your belt. Its a really quick read, but oh so worth it. It's tied with A Catskill Eagle, which is the other extreme of a Spencer story line (lot's more action). I give it a solid 5 out of 5.
Just finished another Spencer book, and I have to say it has been the least favorite of the bunch. Not sure why, but I couldn't really open up to it. Outside the usual players, the characters seemed a little flat/boring. Also, Susan (Spencer's main squeeze) seemed to annoy me more in this book than the rest. With that being said, Spencer get's involved helping out Susan's Ex in a sexual harassment case, which quickly turns to murder. Is the Ex innocent or guilty? There is a twist in the story as it goes on. I might be being generous here, but I'm going to give it just 3 out of 5. Probably would of given it a 2 if Hawk wasn't in it.
Meant to post this a while ago. I finished this last week while I was at the cabin. Another quick, fun read, Spencer becomes involved in murder investigation along with a shady company. The usual suspects are in this one as well. While there's several plot twists, I'm giving it 4 out of 5. Definitively not a complex read, but entertaining.
Just finished another Spencer book. This time Spencer heads down south to investigate a series of horse shootings and murder. This one was nice in the fact that most of the time, it took place in Georgia and there were no mob, gangs or thugs. A little different than some of the books I read, none the less, just as enjoyable. I do wish there was some more involvement with the character, Teddy Sapp. He was in the last book I read, Hundred Dollar Baby and was colorful and entertaining. He was introduced, in this novel, having a smaller part in it. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.
Surprise! I read another Spencer novel from Robert B. Parker. Since the last book I read dealt with the young girl, April Kyle, I thought it would be fitting to read Hundred-Dollar Baby. In this, April returns as a grown woman, who now runs a successful high class madam. She comes to Spencer for help. There's someone harassing her and her girls and needs Spencer to make it stop, then things get complicated. The first half of the book goes really quick with the typical humor and action. Then it starts to become a little more serious with Spencer, dealing with the personal issues and complexities on trying to save April, as in Ceremony. I kinda had a hunch how it was going to end, but there were some twist along the way and the ending did catch me off guard. Like most of the Spencer books I've read so far, I give it 4 out of 5.
Just finished Robert B. Parker's - Ceremony today. It was one of the better Spencer's I've read in a while. The ending is also somewhat unique as well. In this one, Spencer is hired to find a missing girl who's caught up in a prostitution ring. I give it 4 out of 5 for being a quick, entertaining read. It kind of reminded me of a modern twist of Raymond Chandler's, The Big Sleep.
